No homeowner wants to foot the bill for a major expense like carpet replacement, but sometimes there is no way around it. If you think you need to replace your carpet, chances are you probably do; but if you need more convincing, here are the sure signs that your carpet needs replacing:
1. Your carpet is more than 20 years old. If your carpet is more than 20 years old, it needs to be replaced. Twenty years is the maximum years of usage from almost any carpet manufacturer.
2. The stains and odor remain after a professional carpet cleaning. Your carpet may be old, but sometimes a professional carpet cleaning can make a world of difference and extend the life of your carpet for another 3 years or so. However, if this is not the case and the stains and odor remain, it is time to get new carpeting. This is especially true if you have pets and children, although you may want to wait if there is a chance that the size of your household will decrease any time soon.
3. There are rips and tears in the carpet or threadbare places. If you have high traffic areas and a lot of damage to the pile of the carpet, these rips and tears are probably unrepairable and will get worse. Before someone trips or falls, or you ruin the floor (or subfloor) underneath, it is probably a good idea to get new carpeting. Note: It is not a good idea to put area rugs over damaged carpeting as people can still get injured and you can still cause damage to the floor underneath.
4. Allergies will not go away. If you have allergies and they won’t go away and you have old carpeting, it is only a matter of time before you will have to replace the carpeting or remove it and replace it with hard flooring. With old carpeting, mold and mildew may have set in and there isn’t a way to get rid of it if it is in the padding.
