The best leather cleaning and protection advice is to clean leather and protect leather regularly. However, if you have purchased and old couch or simply haven’t taken care of the leather furniture you already have, there is no need to worry; leather is a really forgiving material once you have started taking care of it again.
Saddle soap works the best for cleaning leather and putting the moisture back into it. First wipe the couch or chair down with a dry flannel cloth to remove any extra dust and dirt. Then take a clean flannel cloth and soak it in water, squeezing out any excess. Use this cloth to apply the saddle soap, working it up into a lather with circular motions. Wipe away the lather and then use another clean flannel cloth to polish the leather.
To protect the leather after cleaning it, apply a recommended brand of leather oil using a flannel cloth. You can also use a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and two parts linseed oil, shaken well, to keep leather supple.
Leather Stains:
Since leather does stain, here are some tips to remove some common stains or at least minimize them. Remember, never use soap and water to clean leather and always use any cleaners in minimal amounts or you will do further damage to the leather and possibly ruin it. Rubbing alcohol and cuticle remover (not nail polish remover) work on many stains, but here are some other alternatives:
Normal or unidentifiable stains:
1 part lemon juice and 1 part cream of tartar. Make a paste and rub it into the leather using a soft cloth. Let it set for a few hours and then work in a little more of the paste and wipe clean.
Road Salt from outside: If you get road salt on your leather in the winter time, you can use 1 part water and 1 part white vinegar to get it out. Dip a cloth into the solution and dab it over the leather. The road salt should come right off. Follow up with a treatment of leather oil for a nice polish. This method works on shoes and coats as well.
