People who have made an investment in new carpeting for their home become very protective of it because new carpeting can be expensive and should last for many years. Because of the fear that something so expensive can get ruined so easily, many myths have grown up around how to care for it so that it lasts longer. The most common myths being about how to clean carpets so they don’t get ruined, as well as how often to clean them. Here are some of the most common myths:
Myth #1: Once a carpet is cleaned, it will never look the same again, and cleaning it may even cause it to shrink.
Fact: A new carpet needs to be cleaned within the first year in order for it to remain looking new. Think about a year’s worth of foot traffic and pet dander on your favorite pairs of jeans – without the benefit of washing them. Would you still put them on? While it’s true that you can tell a washed pair of jeans from the new pair in the store – after you have worn them, the same would be true anyway. It is much better to get the dirt out of the carpet than let it sit there. As for shrinking your carpet – that only happens with the use of excess water – which a real professional carpet cleaner knows better than to do.
Myth#2: Vacuuming your carpet often will wear it out.
Fact: This is absolutely not true. If you have ever noticed extremely old carpet in a house, it is mainly worn out in paths that go from room to room, which is caused by foot traffic. The carpet fibers are further worn down by tracked in dirt from outside, that also destroys the pile. Vacuuming at least once a week gets the dirt up and keeps it from getting ground in – actually saving your carpet and keeping it looking nicer, longer. In fact, you can never vacuum your carpets too often.
Myth#3: Carpet cleaning will remove the stain-resistant coating from the carpet.
Fact: All stain-resistant carpets lose their protective treatment over time, but this is again mainly from foot traffic – which wears off the protective coating. Carpet cleaning does not take it off, but if you hire a professional carpet cleaner, they can retreat your carpet after cleaning it to restore the stain-resistant coating if it has been worn off.
Myth #4: My own carpet cleaning machine takes out the stains, so I don’t need a professional cleaning of my carpet.
Fact: A home carpet cleaning machine will get out surface dirt and stains, but it doesn’t have enough suction to get out the deep down dirt and spills, so that your carpet will wear out and age faster. In order to get the deep-down dirt and spills, you will need a professional strength machine to get carpets really clean. Use a home machine for emergencies and between professional cleanings, but always call a pro to protect your home investment and make your carpeting last and look newer for a longer time.
